Pilgrimage season runs December to early May. The traditional ascent begins around 2 AM so you reach the summit for the famous sunrise and the perfect triangular shadow of the peak cast on the clouds below.
Evening puja at the main devale draws thousands of devotees. The annual Esala festival in July features fire-walking and kavadi dancing.
Particularly atmospheric on Tuesday evening novena services, when the church and surrounding streets fill with devotees of every faith.
Time your visit to the puja ceremonies (5:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 6:30 PM) when the inner shrine room is opened, drums echo through the courtyard and devotees offer lotus blossoms. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed at the entrance.
Two annual festivals draw nearly a million pilgrims (2 July and 15 August). The forest setting is profoundly tranquil outside festival weeks; pilgrims collect Madhu sand believed to have healing properties.
Men remove shirts before entering the inner sanctum out of respect; the gold-leaf gopurams blaze under the Jaffna sun.
Non-Muslims are welcomed outside prayer times; modest dress is required. The mosque is in the heart of Pettah's busy bazaar district.
