Historical background
A 2,243-metre conical mountain sacred to Buddhists (footprint of the Buddha), Hindus (Shiva), Christians and Muslims (Adam's first step on earth) and locally venerated since at least the 11th century.
Religious significance
The most ecumenical pilgrimage in Sri Lanka — four world religions converge at one summit footprint shrine.
Visitor experience
Pilgrimage season runs December to early May. The traditional ascent begins around 2 AM so you reach the summit for the famous sunrise and the perfect triangular shadow of the peak cast on the clouds below.
