Historical background

Established during the Dutch colonial era by a Goan Oratorian priest hiding from Dutch authorities, the shrine became renowned throughout Sri Lanka for devotion to St Anthony. Following the Easter Sunday tragedy in 2019 it became an enduring symbol of hope, resilience and national unity.

Dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua — a national shrine of hope and international Catholic destination visited daily by pilgrims of every religion.

Neo-classical church with an historic altar and beautiful stained glass.
