Historical background
Built within the royal palace complex of the last kingdom of the Sinhalese, the temple has housed the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha since the 16th century. Successive kings expanded the shrine; the present-day inner sanctum dates to the Kandyan period and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Religious significance
The most revered Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. Whoever holds the relic was historically considered the rightful ruler of the island. The annual Esala Perahera procession in July-August is one of Asia's most spectacular religious festivals.
Visitor experience
Time your visit to the puja ceremonies (5:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 6:30 PM) when the inner shrine room is opened, drums echo through the courtyard and devotees offer lotus blossoms. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed at the entrance.
