Historical background
Said to predate the Mahabharata and described in classical Tamil literature as one of the five great Shiva temples of the island. Destroyed by the Portuguese in 1622; rebuilt in stages from 1952 onwards.
Religious significance
One of the Pancha Ishwarams — five historic Shiva temples around the Sri Lankan coast — and a key Ramayana site (Ravana is believed to have worshipped here).
Visitor experience
The clifftop setting on Swami Rock above Trincomalee harbour is breathtaking. Watch the priests perform abhishekam at dawn or dusk.
