Historical background
Originally a small chapel built in 1911, the Basilica was constructed following Archbishop Jean-Marie Masson's wartime vow that if Sri Lanka were protected during World War II a great Marian shrine would be built. Construction began in 1950 and the Basilica was consecrated in 1974.
