Historical background
Built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE, Jetavanaramaya was, at 122 metres, the tallest stupa in the ancient world and the third tallest structure on earth after the Great Pyramids of Giza. Constructed from over 93 million bricks, it housed up to 10,000 Mahayana monks at its peak.
Religious significance
An Atamasthana site enshrining a piece of the Buddha's belt. The largest brick-built structure on earth and a UNESCO-listed monument.
