Why this site matters

Why this site matters

The finest surviving example in Sri Lanka of the South-Indian Vijayanagara style fused with Sinhalese Buddhist temple architecture. Together with Lankatilaka and Embekka, it is one of the three great Gampola-era temples of Kandy.

Historical background

Built in 1344 CE during the Gampola period by King Bhuvanekabahu IV, designed by South Indian architect Ganesvarachari. The temple's South Indian Vijayanagara influence sits uniquely alongside Sinhalese Buddhist architecture.

Religious significance

One of the three iconic Gampola-era temples (with Lankatilaka and Embekka) that together form a classic Kandy day pilgrimage.

Architecture

Carved almost entirely from a single granite outcrop in 1344 CE by South-Indian architect Ganesvarachari. Distinctive stone dagoba, image house of Buddha in bhumisparsa mudra, and finely detailed Vijayanagara-style pillars.
