Historical background
Founded by King Valagamba in the 1st century BCE, Abhayagiri grew into one of the most influential monastic universities of the ancient Buddhist world, hosting 5,000 monks and the Chinese pilgrim Faxian in the 5th century CE.
Religious significance
Once rivalled the Mahavihara as the centre of Mahayana scholarship in South Asia. Its 75-metre dagaba remains one of the largest brick structures of the ancient world.
Visitor experience
Sprawling forested ruins — moonstones, twin ponds (Kuttam Pokuna) and the towering brick dome create one of Anuradhapura's most atmospheric walks.
