Historical background
A 48-kilometre chain of limestone shoals between Mannar Island and Pamban Island, identified in the Ramayana as the bridge built by Nala and the Vanara army to allow Rama's forces to cross to Lanka.
Religious significance
One of the most sacred Hindu sites in Sri Lanka and a geological wonder. Satellite imagery shows the chain of shoals clearly.
Visitor experience
Take a half-day boat trip from Talaimannar to walk on the first of the sandbars; the water is shallow and turquoise.
