Package Overview
First recorded in classical Tamil and Sanskrit literature, the chain of limestone shoals between Mannar and Pamban Island has been a pilgrimage site for over 2,000 years. British colonial administrators recorded that pilgrims could walk across as recently as the 15th century before a cyclone deepened the channel in 1480. According to the Ramayana, Rama's army of Vanaras (led by the engineer Nala) built the bridge using floating stones inscribed with Rama's name, allowing Rama's forces to cross from India to Lanka to rescue Sita from Ravana. The first stones were laid at Dhanushkodi on the Indian side; the bridge made landfall in Lanka at Talaimannar.

Boat trips depart from Talaimannar pier daily (sea conditions permitting) and take approximately 3 hours return. Bring sun protection, water and modest swimwear. The route is sensitive — operate only through licensed local boatmen. Best months: February to September. Visa note: foreign visitors can travel freely; no special permit required for the Sri Lankan side. Photography stop at Talaimannar lighthouse on return. (BB)
